This use of poiei implies the action is fully mandated; functioning within society is by permission only, making all transactions, trade, and commerce subservient to the will of the beast. The societal environment becomes one of absolute control, requiring compliance even for basic life essentials such as food, shelter, and market access. This enforced system might be presented by the beast as a sorely-needed reset of the world financial system following preceding global collapses, creating a context where the non-compliant are actively shunned by the world for a short time before lethal consequences are enforced.

The mark itself, which is required for economic survival, presents a mystery regarding its physical form. The receiver is apparently given a choice of the style of marking: either a mark that acts as a tracking chip underneath the skin, perhaps with an outer tattoo signifying the chip's proper location, or a mark that is the beast's name. This name or the number of its name, 666, seems to certainly be a permanent marking such as a tattoo.
